Don’t let the Pattern Day Trader Rule Hamper your Trading Ambition

You probably know that one needs to maintain $25,000 in an equity account at all times to be able to Day Trade Stocks on Margin.  If your balance falls below $25,000 and you were not able to replenish it to the minimum amount for 5 days, your margin trading privileges will be revoked and your account will be a cash only account.

This can cause a major problem for someone who wants to Day Trade or for a beginner trader looking to hone his/her trading skills.

Futures contracts offer the solution to this conundrum.  Unlike stocks trading on margin, futures contracts are:

1-     Highly leveraged

2-     Not subject to the Patten Day Trader Rule

3-     Traders do not pay interest on margin

4-     Trade virtually 24 hours a day

5-     Ample volatility for pure price movement trading

6-     You can open an account with $5000 and trade a contract worth $100,000

While leverage is a great when you have a position that is working in your favor, it can be devastating if you have a position working against you.  Whether you are trading stocks, futures, or flipping houses on 5% down, there is no substitute for proper risk management techniques.
